MISD 2018 Teachers of the YearEvery year, staff members at each of Mansfield ISD’s campuses nominate the teacher they feel has displayed excellence in education by inspiring their students, their colleagues and their community.

Two of those campus winners are then selected by a committee to become the district teachers of the year.

The MISD 2018 Teachers of the Year are Shaye Anne Atwood and Reginal Wright.

Atwood was named the Elementary Teacher of the Year. She is the agricultural leadership teacher at Tarver-Rendon Elementary School. Atwood has been in education for 11 years, 10 of those years have been at Tarver-Rendon Elementary. The West Texas native said she is blessed to be able to teach students about agriculture in one of the only school programs of its kind.

“I just want to thank the administrative council and my principal for believing in me,” Atwood said. “I receive a lot of support to do what I love and integrate the growing of food and the caring of animals into leadership skills.”

Wright is the Secondary Teacher of the Year. He is the head choir director at Mansfield High School and is in his 18th year of being an educator. Wright said he never intended to become a teacher, but he is glad that his path led him there.

“I love inspiring kids through music,” he said. “I just want teachers to know that they have the ability to change the future. No one can change the past, but what you say and do today can change the lives of children forever.”

Atwood and Wright discovered they won the MISD 2018 Teacher of the Year award at the employee recognition banquet on May 17. They will go on to compete in the Education Service Center Region XI Teacher of Year competition and could potentially advance to compete for Texas Teacher of the Year.
